This is the third, exactly identical lapdesk I purchased (had to let go of the first two while moving), and it's way cheaper than the previous ones made by different brands. While it is correct that these things are not very sturdy and stable, the identical, three-adjustable-jointed ones on the market, regardless of the brand, have exactly the same level of sturdiness/stability in my experience.

So while I definitely can understand people complaining about
a) having to remove your laptop and use two hands while adjusting
b) the thing always being slightly wobbly,

After intensive research, I did not find any alternatives that are either made of stronger material, or that are easier to adjust, while offering everything this model offers.
Using this particular model of lapdesks has the advantage of versatility, and if that's your priority, you'll have to accept them for what they are. You can place them on the desk to hold books open and reading without hurting your neck, use it on the floor with your legs under, or use it as a stand next to your desk if you rarely need your computer while studying and want to save desk space.
And wobbliness or no, I have never experienced any accidents (joints giving way and my laptop dropping etc) with these stands, during 5 years I used them.

I purchased this 6 Mts. ago and it's exceeded my expectations. The price is unbeatable for all the features offered. No, it is not a Rolles-Royce, more a Volkswagon:

* The assembly was simple enough. The instructions are among the best I've used.
Note: I think the screw holes are designed to be narrow so that the threads will have more material to grip rather than strip out the hole. As I unpacked it I felt it was thoughtfully designed.

* Shelves are pretty cool. (I have about 45 lb. of books in them and another 15 lb. on the top). No, it does not hold every shape and size of book I own. Few bookcases are meant to.

* The metal quality is good enough and sturdy. The extenders easily tighten in place and have not slipped even when I've leaned on the top. They will scratch, of course, most do, but they are effective & provide height options which is my preference.

* Probably the 44" listed is the safest max. height (I prefer 41"), although lowest height listed is 35" the tray will actually go as low as 28" (including wheels) so keep that in mind. It would be a tall end-table if use for that purpose.

* Fully extended, the top feels a bit wobbly but it's sturdy enough ~this is not a solid wood podium. The fixtures are a bit flimsy but I am careful and I do not over tighten them. And perhaps, I happen to have the improved versions.

* The can roll smoothly over carpet without feeling like it might tip over and each wheel can be locked to keep it in place on a wood floor.

* It is reasonably easy to lift, pack away, and will fit in any car except the itty-bitty ones.

* The bottom and middle portions have good weight and balance. The bottom ledge could be used for a foot stand, that might be useful for some.

This is a beautiful, space saving laptop stand. I do love it, but NOT for the machine I intended. The description says any laptop over 10" - but I would not recommend it for 17" machines. The width on this stand is fixed - not adjustable. We are now using it for my little 13" machine. Originally, we intended to use it for our 17" laptop, but it really isn't deep enough to support the machine - nor wide enough - very precarious. Much of the weight in our 17" resides in the back. With the front clips installed on the stand, the back of the laptop hangs over the back edge and teeters off. I would not feel comfortable using this without front clips.

Great stand, but I wouldn't recommend it for any laptop over 15"

Otherwise, the quality is great, as is the case with most Griffin products.

Seems like there's a lot of these 'adjustable laptop trays' out there. You might read some of the comments and wonder about the quality of some of them. I can't speak to those other trays, but this one really works. The tray and legs are sturdy aluminum and will support any laptop fine. The joints are plastic, but I have had no issue with them. I have back trouble and this thing is perfect for working on my laptop in bed. My laptop is a widescreen, but it fits fine.

You should note that there's no place for a mouse on the tray. Personally I think a mouse would be awkward to use on an inclined tray even if there was room like some trays offer. My suggestion would be to get a wireless mouse and then you can use it on any flat surface and you don't need an attached tray.

A word of caution - even though this tray can indeed fold up, in practice it is a pain to fold and unfold. Like me you'll probably find a setting that works best for you and leave it that way.f

Overall, quality product, does what it says on the box.

UPDATE: This product lasted just under two years and then I was lying on my bed using it like normal one day and the outer joint on one of the legs snapped like a twig. I don't feel ripped off - $44 isn't a bad value for two years of extensive use and comfortable computing. Still, this product obviously has a limited lifespan.

I have had this for 10 months now and I must say it is very very durable! More than I expected when I first got it. I don't handle it with much care and the joints still hold perfectly.

I use it a lot for my bulky 15.6" laptop on a desk and on my bed and it's probably the best home accessory for a laptop I have purchased, the metal helps dissipate the heat nicely, unlike a desk or obviously your bed covers.

Another good thing is that it makes me save space while positioned on my work desk which has a width of 23.6" (60cm), as this inclines the laptop on its 'desktop' position, there is less space taken horizontally on the desk, so I can work on papers in front of the laptop comfortably while keeping the laptop right in front of my eye sight.

As for using it on bed, there is no other way to be as comfortable on a bed with a laptop than with this!

Cons:
1)This thing makes a lot of noise while you are moving the legs around (gives the feeling it's some cheap gadget, but it really isn't as its utility has been very helpful for me). It also makes noise while using it on bed, the joints make little squeals if you or someone else moves on the bed, you get used to it, it really isn't a terrible noise.
2)I am a skinny guy, so using this on bed isn't a problem as I can fit it over me with no problems, someone bigger wouldn't find it too great to use on bed.
3)I was very, very disappointed when I first got it to see that it didn't come with the perforations shown on the pictures, these would have helped even more on keeping the laptop cool. This is the reason why I give it 4 stars, I don't like these sort of surprises when buying online.
